At Fiona Howard Wallpapers, sustainability isn’t just part of our business — it’s a way of life. Every design begins as a hand-printed artwork in our Sussex studio, surrounded by the countryside that inspires so much of our work. We print our wallpapers in the UK using sustainably sourced paper from certified forests and water-based inks that are free from harmful chemicals. Our wallpapers are made to last, with timeless patterns designed to be cherished for years, not seasons.

This same care for the environment extends to the way we live and work each day. Our studio is powered in part by solar panels, providing around half of our energy, we eat a plant-based diet and we drive electric cars to reduce our carbon footprint. We grow and share our own vegetables and fruit, recycle and reuse paper and card wherever possible, ( shredding and composting what we don’t reuse )and live in harmony with the wildlife around us. We’ve installed owl boxes and nesting boxes for swifts, swallows and house martins, and even created a 435-square-metre wildlife pond to support local biodiversity.
Working from home in a well-insulated, naturally lit studio allows Fiona to stay connected to the rhythms of nature, as she is inspired by it— a constant reminder of why sustainability matters so deeply to us.

Fiona’s design process itself has a very small environmental footprint. Each pattern begins by hand ; drawn, painted, or hand-carved into lino — and printed using a manually operated etching press. This traditional, low-impact method uses minimal energy and materials, relying on craftsmanship rather than machinery. It’s a slow, mindful way of creating that honours both the artistry of handmade design and our commitment to treading lightly on the planet.

By treading gently and creating responsibly, we hope every roll of wallpaper carries with it not just beauty, but a sense of respect for the world that inspires it.
